Petitcalator: The World’s Shortest Escalator

Five-step Petitcalator escalator in the basement of Kawasaki More’s, the Guinness World Record holder for the world’s shortest escalator.

The other end is almost close enough to count as here. Nevertheless, an escalator has been provided.

In the basement of Kawasaki More’s, a shopping centre in Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo, the Petitcalator (プチカレーター) has only five moving steps and a vertical rise of 83.4 centimetres.

Guinness World Records recognises it as the shortest escalator in the world. The shopping centre puts the journey at five seconds. Kawasaki Ward’s official guide allows eight.

There is barely time to settle into the role of passenger.

But its shortness is only part of the attraction. To reach the upward-moving escalator, you first encounter five ordinary stairs. A sign on one of them helpfully announces the escalator ahead.

Five ordinary stairs leading to the five moving steps of the Petitcalator inside Kawasaki More’s in Kawasaki.
Five fixed steps, followed by five moving ones.

You still have to climb the first five yourself. Only then does the engineering take over.

Why is it like this?

The arrangement began with a practical problem. In 1989, Kawasaki More’s was being connected to the neighbouring Kawasaki Azalea underground shopping area. The passage met the building between basement floors, leaving a height difference to negotiate.

The plan was a down escalator. The building then raised an objection.

During construction, a thick structural beam was found beneath the floor. The planned escalator would not fit.

Abandoning it altogether was considered. Instead, the escalator was fitted into the space available, with ordinary stairs handling the rest. It also goes up.

The stairs and the escalator divided the work. The stairs received considerably less recognition.

Shortening the journey does not remove the need for moving handrails, circulating steps or safety equipment. All of that machinery, for a rise of less than a metre.

A structural beam had accidentally produced a world record.

The escalator appeared in the 1991 Guinness Book of Records. It also acquired a name through a public competition: Petitcalator, combining petit and escalator. A compromise between two shopping areas had become something people came specifically to see.

Incidentally, thanks to some surprisingly sophisticated engineering, this is also the shortest article in the Places section of Japan in Odd Detail.
