About Japan in Odd Detail

Japan rewards close looking. The oddest detail is often not hidden at all. It is simply there — beside an ordinary street, temple gate, or station — waiting for somebody to notice.

JAPAN IN ODD DETAIL is a personal field guide built around original photographs: local legends, unusual buildings, overlooked monuments, peculiar museums, curious food, and other things that make a map more interesting without requiring the word “crazy.”

This is not an encyclopedia. It is a notebook brought home from a long walk: what I saw, what I learned, and the details that followed me onto the train home.

About the author

Kento Nagatsuka

I work professionally as a lyricist and composer for anime and other projects. I was born and raised in Japan, although I have somehow made it this far without learning to hold chopsticks properly.

When I’m not making music, I travel in search of interesting places, objects and stories — in Japan and occasionally beyond it.

I usually have a Canon EOS R5 with me, having recently switched from an R6. This has improved my chances of photographing unusual things, but not my ability to avoid tripping over completely flat ground.
