Toyosu's Old Shipyard: The Mall You Can Sail Into

A crane, a bridge and a great deal of glass.

The shopping centre at Toyosu, on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay, was built around the dock of an old shipyard. The dock is still open to the water, and boats come in past a red crane to a pier inside.

To let them through, the footbridge across the mouth of the dock lifts in two halves.

When I walked over from the old Harumi railway bridge, a few minutes away, both halves were up.

The underside of a raised white footbridge, its ribs and railings tilted towards the sky, with the other raised half across the water and towers on the far shore
Most footbridges never show you this side.

The shipyard

The dock was here long before the shops. For more than sixty years, the company that became IHI built and repaired ships at Toyosu. The yard closed in 2002, and when the land was redeveloped, the dock was kept as a reminder of what the place had been.

The red crane beside it looks as if it came with the dock. It went up with the shopping centre, which opened in 2006, as a new monument to the shipyard.

The bitt

Boats that come in now tie up at the pier. Down at the water's edge is something ships were once tied to: a squat metal post, rusted brown, with yellow paint still clinging to the top.

It is a mooring bitt. It has been reused, according to the sign beside it, as a stool. Below that, beside a warning triangle: it is dangerous, so please do not climb on top of it.

Which is, to be fair, good advice for most stools.

In the sign's own photo, it stands in front of a straight concrete block. It has since been given something rounder.

The boats

On a Sunday afternoon, the dock was in use. Boats were tied up at the pier, and people were walking along the edge, past a banner advertising a cruise.

The pier inside the dock. Arriving by boat was part of the plan from the start.

One of the boats that call here is the Nihonbashi e-LINER, which has run between here and Nihonbashi, in central Tokyo, since April 2026. It is fully electric, and was built at a yard in Ise, in Mie Prefecture.

At the crane's foot stand four grey boxes, numbered one to four. The boat's owner says it installed four rapid chargers beside the pier, running on electricity from the shopping centre.

The boat that brings the shoppers runs on the shops.
